Quenching And Re-Aging Treatment Effects On Assab Corax Alloy PDF Print E-mail

Quenching and Re-aging Treatment Effects on ASSAB Corax Alloy. The microstructure and microhardness observation on quenched and aged ASSAB Corax alloy sample was carried out. The sample was cut into several pieces, the first sample is kept original, and the others were homogenated by heating them at 900 oC for 24 hours and then quenched into liquid nitrogen. A part of these samples was aged by heated at 800 oC with the holding period of 6, 8 and 12 hours respectively, and then cooled slowly in the furnace. All samples were mounted and then polished before being etched in order to observe the grain boundaries. The microstructure observation for all samples was carried out by using optical microscope (MO) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), supported by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), while the hardness was measured by using a vickers hardness tester. X-ray diffraction was carried out to identify the existing phases. The microstructure results supported by X-ray diffraction and the hardness quality data show that there is no significant change in the microstructure of the samples. Meanwhile from the microhardness observation, the hardness of the original sample is higher compared to that of the homogenized sample, and the lowered hardness for the aged samples is due to the little growth of the precipitate during aging.
